More About Geoff
Geoff McKay (He/They) is originally from Richland WA. Geoff attended Columbia Basin College, where he earned an AA transfer degree before attending Central Washington University for both a BM and MM in trumpet performance. While in WA state, Geoff performed as a substitute member for many of the region's orchestras, including the Mid-Columbia Symphony, Wenatchee Valley Symphony Orchestra, and the Yakima Symphony Orchestra. He also performed the first movement of Hummel's Trumpet Concerto as a Spokane Symphony Orchestra young artist winner.
After completing their studies at CWU, Geoff moved to Atlanta, GA to attend Georgia State University and pursue a Post-Master's Performance Certificate. Upon that degree's competition, Geoff began the DMA degree at the University of North Carolina Greensboro in 2021. Alongside the DMA, Geoff has completed a PBC in musicology. While in NC, he has performed with the Piedmont Wind Symphony, Orquesta Mayor, and as a collaborative guest at the Weatherspoon Art Museum.
Geoff's research interests are focused on the social connotation (sonic coding) of the trumpet as portrayed in popular film, and their performances often aim to subvert these connotations. Outside of the trumpet, his research interests are in popular/punk/metal music and its relation to political discourse and social movements.
Geoff has recently accepted a teaching position at Spokane Community College, beginning in January of 2024.
