Exhibition Statement
The inaugural UNCG BA 2023 Exhibition is a comprehensive collection of mixed media artworks that highlight the advanced, technical skill of UNCG’s Bachelor of Arts students. Steeped in symbolism– all artwork present in this exhibition interrogates definitions of emotion, identity, or nature through visual aesthetics. The objective of this exhibition is to emphasize the skillset, rigor and passion of UNCG’s BA student body. All facets of this show have been actualized through the work of BA students.
Curatorial Statement
Co-curated by Quan Apollo (BA Studio Art), and Angelica Henry (BA Art History,) the duo acutely focused on all corners of submission, curation and exhibition in order to make this process practical to all submitting BA students.
Quan Apollo (b. 2001) is an African American and Vietnamese interdisciplinary artist. Working largely in the photographic, sculpting, collage, and printmaking mediums, he explores issues of race, culture, and intersectionality to create a broader understanding of tense relations between groups of people in the American landscape. Additionally, Quan uses his platform to connect and create opportunities to give underserved communities access to fine art and avenues to establish careers in artmaking by curating and taking residential commissions along the east coast.
Angelica Henry (BA Art History/Arts Administration) is a 26 year old from Sanford, Florida. Henry’s curiosities lie in public art spaces, curation and most importantly, people.
“The most intriguing thing about curation is threading artwork to text. What keeps me from poking myself, rather, the thimble, is remaining open to consuming the histories of others. Curation is the most intricate language of storytelling.”
