The exhibition is inspired by the idea of a detached theatre, hovering over a disturbed land which is occupied by ghosts on the ground. This project is an invitation to use this metaphor of performative commentary as a model to reflect on the evolution of facts, stories and myth.
Hagit Barkai
Hagit Barkai is an assistant professor of art in painting and foundation; and coordinator of senior capstone program in the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. She received an MFA from Penn State University in 2008, a B.A. in Philosophy from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 2004, and studied drawing and painting at the Jerusalem Studio School in Jerusalem, Israel. Barkai is a visual artist working primarily in painting. Her process also includes drawing, prints, and photo-performance directing. Her work depicts the awkwardness of the body in symbolic poses as resistance to cultural, political and personal narratives. She uses the ability of paint to slip from form to formless and to layer conflicting images into a unified surface to trace situations in which the body resists performing with clear identity or purpose. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally in venues such as Praxis Gallery in New York, NY; Scope in Miami Basel, Kunsthalle Faust, Hannover, Germany; Manifesta, Hasselt Belgium, Chashama Gallery in New York, NY, Crane Gallery in Philadelphia, PA; and Tmu-Na Theatre in Tel Aviv Israel. Her work has been reviewed in various media such as Creative Loafing Charlotte, NC; Arts art news in Charlotte NC, Houston Chronicle in Houston, TX and Pittsburgh City Paper in Pittsburgh, PA. She is the recipient of the College Art Association Professional Development Fellowship in Visual Arts in 2008.
