Installation on View
from September - December 2023
Exploration of eco-conscious furniture design alternatives, with a specific focus on utilizing cardboard layering to create environmentally friendly seating.
The chair consists of 175 layers of recycled cardboard, measuring 35 by 48 inches. These layers are firmly bonded using a water-based adhesive that has minimal volatile organic compound (VOC) content, ensuring a safe and non-harmful composition. The chair's design was crafted using Rhinoceros 3D software, and the parametric aspects were programmed within the Grasshopper software.
This project was funded by UNCG Sustainability’s Green Fund grant. In 2016, UNCG students elected to allocate a portion of their student activity fees toward environmental stewardship and established the Green Fund. Governed by a committee of students with assistance from faculty and staff experts, the Green Fund operates as a campus-based grant program that offers education, research, and professional development opportunities for students and employees by investing in campus infrastructure and programming to help meet the goals of the UNCG’s sustainability mission.
