“Disconnect from illusion to reconnect to reality” - Natalie Robinson
About Dysconnected
This exhibition explores the impact that social media has on our own reality. As we continue to live in a world run by technology, we turn to social media, the place where we find comfort through hearts designed as likes. Our brains work every single day; we need to stop and recognize the time to unplug our phones from our brains. Perhaps, we would be better off disconnecting.
About Natalie
Robinson is a UNCG School of Art BFA student specializing in Graphic Design. In her opinion, the world would be black and white without the arts. For her, it is important to take the creative and chaotic path, and she has lived that kind of life since childhood. As a 21-year-old female in the art community she’s had to prove to the “powers that be” that her capabilities are not limited by her age. She believes that an artist should be an activist for social justice and change, and the time to engage is always now.
From Mickalene Thomas to Amy Sherald to Roxanna Hall, Robinson believes that artists have a mission to see things from a different view. Seeing things from a unique perspective leads to changes in attitude, and changes in attitude lead to real progress as a society. Per Oscar Wilde: “No great artist ever sees things as they really are. If he did, he would cease to be an artist.”
As a self-prescribed free spirit Robinson believes in spontaneity as a driving force for creativity. In addition to pursuing a career as a professional artist, she enjoys reading comics, thrifting, roller-skating, soaking up the sunshine, and indulging in chocolate-covered pretzels.
