Playpublik 2014
These pictures are from Playpublik, an urban games festival in Krakow, Poland in 2014. It was the first time I performed games as an official part of an event, right after I moved to Berlin in 2014. Playpublik was organized by Invisible Playground, a collective of game designers based in Berlin that was one of the early groundbreakers & trendsetters for making physical games / urban games a “thing” that could get official recognition, get grants to pay for projects, and be considered something like art.
The idea for the performance was that I had been cursed to play non-stop, and I needed participants' help to lift the curse so I could finally go back to being serious. I brought body paint that would represent the curse, and in Krakow one of the Polish translators introduced me to her sister who was a graphic designer and created the designs for me.
She painted red designs on my arms for the first part of the performance on day one, and blue and yellow designs on my upper body for the second part on day two when the curse had "gotten worse" and covered my whole body. I wore a jacket and mask to hide the full body designs while leading players to a kindergarten playground, and once we got there I threw it off and we played a bunch of games.
