Joyce Watkins King is a native North Carolinian, born and raised in Oxford, NC. Raleigh has been her home since 1975 when she accepted a full scholarship to the College of Design at NC State University.
In addition to a B.A. Degree in Environmental Design in Visual Design/Product Design and a minor in Textiles, she holds an M.S. Degree in Management and Textiles, also from NC State and CFRE (Certified Fundraising Executive Professional) licensing. She is currently an MFA in Studio Practice candidate at UNC-Greensboro.
Joyce is a fellow of the Vermont Studio Center, the Hambidge Center in Georgia, and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. She has also taken courses at Penland School in metalsmithing, photojournalism, printmaking, mixed media painting, encaustic, and public art.
During the past ten years Joyce has had 21 solo shows in North Carolina. Her work has been included in more than 100 local and regional juried group exhibitions, four national exhibitions, and three international exhibitions. Her work is represented in many private, corporate, and institutional collections in the Triangle region of North Carolina including Meredith College,SAS, Hunt Library t NC State University, the NC Museum of History, and Capital Associated Industries.
Since 2010 Joyce's primary medium has been fiber/fabric.
Her work explores the boundaries between painting and sculpture, inside and outside, abstraction and representation, time and space.
