More About Encroachment
Encroachment is an experiential and immersive exhibit that encompasses reflections on culture through the lens of the “other”; the “other” meaning the modern-day person, all of us. The paradigm that the exhibit exposes presents the “other," not only as a single manifestation of race, ethnicity, or gender but provides an opportunity for audiences to contextualize the “other” as any position that discriminates or encroaches upon a person, their culture, religion, or beliefs. The exhibit examines misconceptions and maladaptive practices people have in viewing and engaging with worlds other than their own. Audiences will be taken through a visual, audio, and tactical experience of acknowledging the power and influence of initial perceptions and how some of those perceptions can lead to unequal, harmful, and hateful ideologies. Encroachment encourages audience members to consider, through the artistic forms of dance, print-work, and music, the concept of appreciation and how imperceptibly the line blends with that of encroachment. This immersive exhibit will also demonstrate alternative ways that moving bodies and various spaces can speak.
More About Lisa
I am a dancer, educator, choreographer, director, motivator, and developer. I seek to have my work reflect the intensity and intention of my process, which is rooted in my love of dance, music, landscapes, literature, art, coffee, and quiet time. Risk-taking informs my creative process the same way my life experiences inform who I am as a person. I incorporate the vulnerability of the dancers I work with, their constraints, freedoms, and movement experiences to draw upon as an influence on my process. How I approach my work with dancers is similar to how I approach work with spaces. I aim to see the constraints and freedoms of each space I can utilize and use existing structures as an influence. Heritage is at the core of how I move and influences what I create. Therefore, I use connections between Latin and African diasporas to paint and create with. I desire not to recreate movement but unleash it. Learn more at www.artist-lisahines.com
