March 3rd, 8pm
Greensboro Project Space presents a unique rock & roll & reading event. Chrissie Hynde, leader of the Hall of Fame band the Pretenders, is one of America's foremost rockers: a musical force across four decades, a voice for the ages, a feminist icon, and a great songwriter who has given us iconic songs like “Brass in Pocket,” “Back on the Chain Gang,” and “I’ll Stand by You.”
Hynde’s biographer, Adam Sobsey, is joined by a combo of local musicians for an evening of exploration of the music and life of one of rock music’s greats. Sobsey will read from his book’s investigations of several Pretenders songs—from early classics to late-career gems—each accompanied by live renditions of those songs. It’s a true School of Rock: informative, fun, and properly loud. A Q&A will follow, and signed copies of Sobsey’s book will be available at a discount.
This event is pay-what- you-can. Donations for the band are gladly welcomed.
Adam Sobsey’s book Chrissie Hynde: A Musical Biography (Univ. of Texas Press 2017) was called “gloriously comprehensive […] truly does deliver the goods,” by Pop Matters. He has written about music for The Paris Review, the Independent Weekly, and elsewhere. He lives in Durham.
